กาลครั้งหนึ่ง หมาจิ้งจอกเห็นอีกาตัวหนึ่งคาบก้อนเนื้อบินมาเกาะอยู่บนกิ่งไม้ "ก้อนเนื้อนั่นมันของฉันนี่หว่า เพราะว่าฉันคือหมาจิ้งจอก" มันจึงเข้าไปที่โคนต้นไม้นั้น “สวัสดีจ๊ะ, คุณนายกา” มันพูดขึ้นดังๆ “วันนี้คุณดูสวยจังเลยนะ ขนก็มันเลื่อม ดวงตาก็เป็นประกาย ผมรู้สึกมั่นใจว่าเสียงของคุณ จะต้องไพเราะยิ่งกว่าเสียงของนกอื่น ๆ อย่างแน่นอน เช่นเดียวกับรูปร่างอันสวยงามของคุณนั่นแหละ ขอให้ผมได้ฟังคุณร้องเพลงสักเพลงเดียวก็พอ เพื่อที่ว่าผมอาจต้อนรับคุณในฐานะเป็น"ราชินีแห่งนก" ก็ได้”
Once upon a time, a fox saw a crow fly off with a piece of meat in its beak and settle on a branch of a tree. "This is for me, as I am a fox." and then walked up to the foot of the tree. “Good-day, Mistress Crow” he cried. “How well you are looking to day: How glossy your feathers; How bright your eyes. I feel sure your voice must surpass that of other birds, just as your figure does. Let me hear but one song from you that I may greet you as the Queen of Birds.”
อีกาก็ชูหัวสูงขึ้นแล้วก็เริ่มร้อง กา-กา ด้วยเสียงที่คิดว่าดีที่สุด แต่ขณะที่เธออ้าปากร้อง ก้อนเนื้อก็ร่วงหล่นลงสู่พื้นดิน หล่นลงไปเพื่อให้หมาจิ้งจอกงับเข้าปากเพียงอย่างเดียวเท่านั้น "สำเร็จแล้ว" มันพูด "ฉันก็ต้องการเพียงเท่านี้แหละ"
The crow lifted up her head and began to caw her best. But the moment she opened her mouth the piece of meat fell to the ground only to be snapped up by the fox. “That will do” said he. “That was all I wanted.”
